Vasu and Vani lived in a large country house with their little son Bholu. They kept a mongoose as a pet. Bholu and the mongoose were very fond of each other. They became good playmates.
One day Vasu was at his farm. Vani went out to do some work. Bholu was at his cradle. The mongoose was sitting by the cradle to protect Bholu from any harm. Suddenly, it saw a snake creeping towards Bholu. The mongoose pounced and caught the serpent’s neck. There was a fierce fight between the mongoose and the snake. Soon the mongoose killed the snake.
After some time the mongoose saw Vani coming towards the house. It ran to the entrance to greet her. Vani saw the marks of blood on her pet’s mouth and paws. She feared that it had killed her beloved son. Wild with anger she picked up a stick and hit the poor animal and killed it.

Then she ran to see her child. She saw her Bholu safe in the cradle. She also saw the dead snake. Then she realised her mistake. She killed the innocent and faithful animal who had saved her son. Her sorrow knew no bounds. But it was no use crying over the spilt milk. So we must think twice before taking any action.
