South Indian drink made from jaggery, black pepper, cardamom and water. In South Indian temples, large panakam pots are offered to Lord Sri Rama. Distributed among devotees. This day is celebrated to commemorate the birth of the Hindu Lord Shree Rama. Sri Rama Navami falls on the ninth day of the Chaitra Masam every year. The festival is incomplete without Panakam.

Panakam is a sweet drink. In its simplest and most traditional form, it implies water sweetened with jaggery, flavoured with crushed cardamom and seasoned with ground black pepper. This basic drink is known as Panakam in Telugu, Panagam in Tamil and Panaka in Kanada. It is a naturally sweetened summer cooler laced with a subtle hint of spice. Vata, Kapha and Pitta on hot days. It provides immediate relief from the hot sun.

Panakam

Ingredients

Jaggery – 1 cup grated

for Panakam – Water 1 letter( 4 cups)

Black peppercorns – 5 ( dry roast for a mt and crush)

Dry ginger powder – 1/2 tbsp

Green cardamom – 2 (crushed)

How to make panakam

Add the grated jaggery to 4 cups of room-temperature water and let it dissolve. Strain the liquid in a serving bowl. Add cardamom powder, and mix. pour into glasses and serve.

Vadapappu

Vadapappu is the only soaked moong dal. It is served with the Sri Rama Navami festival celebrated. Provides instant relief from the hot.

How to make Vadappu

Ingredients

Vadapappu : Yellow moong dal 1 cup. Soak for 1 hour and drain completely. soaked moong dal and removed to a serving bowl. There is a savoury version of vadapappu where grated raw mango, coconut, carrot and green chiles are added.

Suggestions 

For savory vaddapappu. Add 4 tbsps of grated raw mango, 2 finely chopped green chilli, 4 tbsps of freshly grated coconut, 4 tbsps of grated carrot, finely chopped coriander leaves and salt.

Panakam is too sweet, add more water.
